When Kobe suffered that torn achilles the other night, my heart skipped a beat. Not only am I a Kobe fanatic, but a life long lover of the game of basketball. And if I consider myself an obsessed fan... what does that make Kobe? After 17 years of playing basketball as a professional, over 50,000 minutes recorded on the court, 5 world championships, several scoring titles an MVP, countless broken records and still little to no satisfaction in his accomplishments.. I can only imagine how he felt to go down with a season ending injury 2 games out from the start of the post season. I watched his post game interview dozens of times. His blood shot eyes filled with disbelief, sorrow and rage. Disappointment to the highest degree. A certain disappointment that only comes through the purest of passions and love for his sport, his craft, his love, his LIFE.
I relate, especially because I share a similar passion, not necessarily for basketball, but for what I do. As Kobe says himself "I do what I do." And what we do defines us. It's really that simple. When you dedicate yourself to something that regularly, when you love something that purely, you become it. 34 years old or not, he'll be back and better then ever.
